The Central government announced on Thursday the appointment of Justice Sheel Nagu as the Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court
Prior to this, Justice Nagu served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, succeeding Chief Justice Ravi Malimath, who stepped down on May 24, 2024.
Following Justice Nagu’s new appointment, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Official Notification
The official notification stated: “The President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sheel Nagu, Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, to be the Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
Supreme Court Collegium’s Recommendation
Justice Nagu’s appointment was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, which includes Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, on December 28, 2023. This recommendation followed the retirement of Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha on October 13, 2023.
Recent Judicial Appointments
This marks the second judicial appointment cleared by the Centre in two days after being pending for over six months, following the appointment of Justice BR Sarangi as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on July 3.
