IndiGo to Launch Gender-Neutral ‘Mx’ Honorific for Ticket Bookings, Plans to Double Employment of Individuals with Disabilities in Major Inclusivity Push
IndiGo is set to introduce a gender-neutral honorific option, ‘Mx’, during the ticket booking process as part of its broader push for inclusivity. This new option will cater to transgender passengers who prefer not to identify as male or female, according to Sukhjit S. Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo. Currently, passengers can only select ‘male’ or ‘female’ when booking tickets, but the new ‘Mx’ option will soon be available. Air India Express and Vistara already offer this choice.
Pasricha mentioned that IndiGo has implemented various initiatives to support the LGBTQ+ community, including employee referral programs that encourage hiring from within this group. The airline collaborates with agencies specializing in LGBTQ+ recruitment and has made strides in hiring LGBTQ+ individuals across various roles, including flying positions. IndiGo also offers benefits like coverage for gender reassignment surgery and medical insurance for live-in partners, which have made the airline a more inclusive workplace.
As of March 31, 2024, IndiGo employed 36,860 permanent staff, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew members. The airline also employs over 240 individuals with disabilities across more than 60 cities, primarily in customer-facing roles. Pasricha stated that the airline aims to double the number of individuals with disabilities employed in the coming financial year.
