General Election 2024: Step by Step Guide for First Time Voters in India to Cast Votes

From verifying their eligibility to cast a vote to navigating the polling booth and understanding the significance of their choice, there are several steps that new voters must grasp to make their voices heard effectively. As the nation prepares for this democratic spectacle, empowering first-time voters with the knowledge and confidence to engage in the electoral process is paramount.

1. Eligibility Check:

   Before going to the polling booth, ensure that your name is on the voter’s list. You can check this by contacting the electoral registration officer of your area or by visiting the Election Commission’s website and searching using your EPIC number.

2. Required Documents:

   Carry any of the following identity proofs:

   • Voter ID card
   • Aadhar card
   • PAN card
   • Driving license
   • Passport
   • Bank/Post office passbook with a photo
   • Pension document with photograph
   • MNREGA job card
   • Smart card issued by RGI under NPR
   • Service identity cards with photographs issued by central/state govt./PSU/public limited company
   • Health insurance smart cards issued under the Ministry of Labour scheme
   • Official identity cards issued to MPs/MLAs/MLCs, etc.

1. Voting Process:

   • Locate Your Polling Booth: Use the Election Commission’s website or contact the authorities to find your designated polling booth.
   • Verification Process: At the polling booth, a polling officer will check your name on the voter list and verify your ID proof.
   • Inking and Documentation: After verification, your index finger will be inked, and you’ll receive an acknowledgment slip. You’ll also need to sign a register.
   • Proceeding to the Polling Booth: Hand the acknowledgment slip to the next officer, display your inked finger, and enter the polling booth.
   • Casting Your Vote: Inside the booth, use the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to select your candidate by pressing the corresponding button. Listen for the beep sound confirming your vote.
   • Verification via VVPAT: A slip will be printed by the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine, showing the candidate you’ve chosen.
   • NOTA Option: If none of the candidates appeal to you, select ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) on the EVM.
   • If a verification slip doesn’t appear after casting your vote, immediately inform the polling officials at the booth for assistance.

By following these steps, you can actively participate in the democratic process and exercise your right to vote in the general elections.
