Mukhtar Ansari Faces Life Sentence for Fake Arms License, Jail Term for Death Threat
On Wednesday, Mukhtar Ansari, a former gangster who transitioned into politics, was handed a life sentence in a case involving fake arms licenses. The judgment was delivered by Varanasi MP-MLA Court Special Judge Avnish Gautam. Ansari, a former MLA from Uttar Pradesh, has been held in Banda jail since 2021 after being transferred from a jail in Punjab.
This case dates back to 1990 when the CBCID filed an FIR against Ansari for obtaining an arms license using forged documents while he was an MLA. The FIR implicated Ansari and arms clerk Gauri Shankar Lal for orchestrating the issuance of a fake arms license with falsified signatures of the then DM Alok Ranjan and SP Devraj Nagar. Ansari’s legal counsel confirmed his virtual presence during the proceedings via video conferencing.
Additionally, Ansari received a sentence of five-and-a-half years for issuing a death threat to a coal trader in 1997. The special court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ansari for threatening Mahaveer Prasad Ranguta’s life. Ansari had allegedly threatened to detonate explosives at Ranguta’s residence in Varanasi. The court concluded the hearings on December 5, 2023, and subsequently convicted Ansari, delivering the sentence via video conferencing as he remained in Banda jail.
Previously, Ansari had served as a five-time MLA from the Mau assembly constituency. Despite not participating in the 2022 assembly elections, his seat was secured by his son Abbas Ansari under the banner of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).
