Hemant Soren Seeks Swift Resolution Ahead of Election Phase, Challenges High Court’s Dismissal of Plea
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has taken his case to the Supreme Court following the High Court’s dismissal of his challenge against the Enforcement Directorate’s arrest. Soren sought an expedited hearing due to the upcoming election phase starting on May 13.
Earlier, the Jharkhand High Court rejected Soren’s plea contesting his arrest in a land scam case by the Enforcement Directorate. The plea was dismissed just four days after the Supreme Court mentioned that the High Court was free to deliver its judgment in the matter.
Representing Hemant Soren, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal urged the bench to consider the Special Leave Petition promptly, especially given the imminent election phase in Jharkhand. Soren was arrested on January 31, and despite filing the petition on February 4, the High Court had not issued a judgment, with the election phase beginning on May 13.
In another development, the bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra was informed that a pending petition would be addressed by the bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna the following day. Consequently, the Chief Justice instructed the senior counsel to email both matters together for listing.
Previously, Hemant Soren had approached the Supreme Court, citing the High Court’s delay in delivering a verdict on his petition challenging the ED’s arrest. The High Court had reserved judgment on February 28, 2024. The Supreme Court issued a notice on April 29 in response to Soren’s petition challenging his arrest by the ED.
