Former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to resolve the conflict in Ukraine if re-elected, following a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Trump described the call as a “very good call” on Truth Social, promising to “bring peace to the world” and end the ongoing war. He emphasized his commitment to resolving the conflict, which has resulted in extensive loss of life and destruction.
Zelenskyy, who also condemned a recent assassination attempt on Trump, congratulated him on his successful performance at the Republican National Convention. In response, Trump expressed appreciation for Zelenskyy’s outreach, asserting that his potential presidency would end the war and alleviate the suffering caused by the conflict.
Zelenskyy, in a post on X, wished Trump “strength and absolute safety in the future” and highlighted the importance of bipartisan American support for Ukraine. He underscored that U.S. assistance remains crucial for Ukraine’s defense and sovereignty.
Earlier, Trump claimed during a pre-election debate that he could resolve the conflict before his inauguration on January 20, 2025. This assertion has sparked varied reactions, raising concerns about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine as Trump’s campaign gains traction and President Joe Biden’s backing appears to diminish.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken addressed possible shifts in U.S. policy towards Ukraine during a discussion at the Aspen Media Forum. He assured that the U.S., along with over 20 other nations, has committed to long-term support for Ukraine through ten-year security agreements. Blinken affirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aim to eradicate Ukraine has “failed” and will not succeed.
In a related development, Zelenskyy made history as the first foreign leader to attend a British cabinet meeting in person since former U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1997. During his visit, Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders, securing renewed support against Russian aggression. Starmer also pledged coordinated action against Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers evading Western sanctions on Russian oil.
These international interactions highlight the global dedication to supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing diplomatic and political challenges.
