Lawyer in Maharashtra Faces FIR for Sharing Dhruv Rathee’s Video Criticizing PM Modi During Lok Sabha Elections
A first information report (FIR) has been filed against a lawyer in Maharashtra for allegedly sharing a video by YouTuber Dhruv Rathee that criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
The FIR was registered against Advocate Aadesh Bansode following a complaint from another lawyer, Jayant Walinjkar, to the Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) Police.
Walinjkar informed the police that Bansode had posted Rathee’s video titled ‘Mind of Dictator’ in a WhatsApp group belonging to the Vasai court Bar Association, of which both are members. Bansode reportedly shared the video on May 20, urging the group to watch it before voting.
Based on this report, the MBVV Police registered an FIR. A head constable from the MBVV secret branch stated that Rathee’s video and Bansode’s message attempted to influence voters.
“The video shared by the accused, along with Bansode’s message, makes false statements about Lok Sabha election candidates and tries to influence voters, thereby violating the prohibitory orders issued by the police commissioner,” the FIR states.
The MBVV Police Commissioner had previously issued prohibitory orders to ensure the smooth conduct of the general elections within his jurisdiction.
