Lawyer Steps In to Support Minor’s Delivery After State Refuses Financial Aid
In a recent case before the Rajasthan High Court, Advocate Shreyansh Mardia volunteered to cover the delivery expenses of a pregnant minor rape victim after the State declined to take on the financial responsibility. The court, led by Justice Dinesh Mehta, acknowledged the lawyer’s gesture, noting that no further direction was required for the State to bear the costs.
The case was brought forward by the father of the minor victim, who had initially sought an abortion. However, by the time the court granted permission, the pregnancy had reached 29 weeks, making the procedure risky. The family opted to proceed with the delivery and requested financial support from the State to cover the associated expenses. Despite this, the State’s counsel argued against being directed to cover the costs, leading to Mardia’s offer.
The court also instructed the Child Welfare Committee to provide counseling to the victim and her family regarding the adoption process and manage custody of the newborn if necessary. The plea was then disposed of in light of the lawyer’s offer to cover the expenses.
