Delhi Riots Case: Salim Malik Withdraws Bail Plea in Delhi Riots Case Before Supreme Court

Delhi Riots Case: Salim Malik Pulls Bail Plea in Supreme Court Amid Delhi Riots Case

Salim Malik, a defendant in the February 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, withdrew his bail application before the Supreme Court on Friday [Salim Malik @ Munna vs State of National Capital Territory of Delhi].

Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal allowed the withdrawal of the plea.

On April 22, the Delhi High Court denied bail to Malik, highlighting his attendance at meetings where discussions about riot-like violence and the burning of the national capital took place.

Malik was apprehended by the Delhi Police on June 25, 2020, and charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The Delhi Police alleged that Malik was involved in a premeditated conspiracy to disrupt the peace and incite violence during protests in Delhi.

In October 2022, the trial court dismissed Malik’s bail application, citing his participation in conspiratorial meetings.

The High Court affirmed this decision, emphasizing that violent public demonstrations, causing property damage and endangering lives, transcend fundamental rights and constitute punishable offenses.

During the Supreme Court hearing, Justice Trivedi expressed skepticism about the necessity of overturning the lower courts’ rulings.

Consequently, Malik opted to withdraw his petition.
