The Delhi High Court has requested responses from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the police regarding a petition from 45 vendors contesting the demolition of their semi-permanent shops in a local market.
Justices Vibhu Bakhru and Sachin Datta issued notices to the MCD, Delhi Police, and Delhi government, requiring them to respond within two weeks. The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 14.
The vendors, who have operated at the ‘Sheetla Mata Market’ in Madangir for several years, claim their shops were demolished on July 30 without following legal procedures.
Advocates Sanjay Baniwal and Manisha, representing the vendors, are seeking the restoration of their vending units. They argue that the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act mandates a 30-day notice before any demolition or eviction occurs.
The vendors also submitted a representation in August requesting the reinstatement of their units. As an interim measure, they have asked the court to prevent the MCD and police from interfering with their vending activities at the market.
