Delhi High Court Orders Sunita Kejriwal to Remove Video of Arvind Kejriwal’s Court Address from Social Media

The Delhi High Court has directed Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, to remove a video recording of her husband addressing a Delhi court from her social media accounts.

Additionally, social media companies have been instructed to take down any posts related to the video.

The court has issued notices to all parties involved in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Vaibhav Singh. The PIL seeks action for violating the court’s video conferencing rules when Kejriwal appeared before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on March 28.

Notices Issued to Involved Parties

A bench comprising Justices Neena Bansal Krishna and Amit Sharma has issued notices to six individuals, including Sunita Kejriwal, as well as social media intermediaries X, Meta, and YouTube. The petition alleges that these parties violated the Delhi High Court’s video conferencing rules.

The court also instructed social media intermediaries to remove similar content if it is found to have been reposted.

Interim Order and Further Hearing

The court passed an ex-parte interim order and scheduled the next hearing for July 9. The case is based on a petition by lawyer Vaibhav Singh.

In his petition, Singh contended that on March 28, when Arvind Kejriwal was brought before a trial court following his arrest in the Delhi excise policy case, he chose to address the court in person. The video recording of this proceeding was subsequently posted on social media platforms, which is prohibited under the Delhi High Court Rules for Video Conferencing for Courts, 2021.

The video was allegedly reposted by Sunita Kejriwal and others.
