Delhi High Court Issues Notice on Illegal Ticket Scalping Practices

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Central government and ticketing platforms such as Zomato, StubHub, Viagogo, and Ticombo in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the illegal practice of “ticket scalping.”

This practice involves bots purchasing a large number of tickets for events like music concerts and then reselling them at highly inflated prices, preventing genuine fans from accessing tickets at reasonable rates.

The petition, filed by Rohan Gupta, pointed out that ticket scalping was prevalent during concerts of popular singers such as Karan Aujla and Diljit Dosanjh earlier this year. The plea called for a committee to be formed to investigate the issue and create guidelines to prevent ticket scalping and black marketing.

During the hearing, the bench, led by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, remarked on the potential use of bots in the process, suggesting possible collusion between parties. The court has set February 18, 2025, as the next hearing date.

The petitioner argued that the unethical practice of ticket scalping negatively affects fair market principles and creates an unfair system where only those willing to pay inflated prices can access tickets. Furthermore, the plea emphasized the need for a robust legal framework and enforcement mechanisms to ensure equitable ticketing practices.

Advocates Gaurav Dua, Jatin Yadav, Daksh Gupta, and Saurabh Dua appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
