Delhi High Court Directs Chief Secretary to Address BJP’s Allegations of Selective CCTV Installations by AAP Government

The Delhi High Court has instructed the Chief Secretary of Delhi to address allegations made by BJP leader Abhay Verma, claiming that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government is selectively installing CCTV cameras in areas represented by its own legislators

The Court directed the Chief Secretary to treat Verma’s Public Interest Litigation (PIL) as a representation and resolve the issue within two weeks.

Verma, who serves as an MLA from the Lakshmi Nagar assembly constituency and is the Vice President of BJP Delhi, filed the PIL asserting that the AAP government, led by then Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, had sanctioned the installation of 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras during the 2020-21 budget. However, he claimed that the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister was given discretion over where these cameras would be installed, leading to a biased implementation process.

Represented by advocate Satya Ranjan Swain, Verma argued that the PWD was using a selective approach, choosing to install cameras only in areas where AAP leaders were elected.

In response, Santosh Kumar Tripathi, Delhi Government’s Standing Counsel, refuted these claims, stating that the camera installations were based on comprehensive surveys and inputs from all relevant stakeholders, with no partiality involved.

The High Court’s Division Bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, has asked the Chief Secretary to examine the issue and submit a decision within two weeks.
