Delhi High Court Bar Association Rejects Women’s Reservation Proposal for Executive Committee

The General Body of the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) recently rejected a proposal to reserve specific posts for women on its Executive Committee.

The meeting, presided over by DHCBA President Mohit Mathur and Secretary Sandeep Sharma, saw significant opposition from male members when the resolution was introduced. The opposition was so overwhelming that it overshadowed the voices of women lawyers supporting the move.

Sharma later clarified the DHCBA’s stance by stating, “We are against any kind of reservation for any seat.” This decision comes despite the Supreme Court’s suggestion to reserve at least four out of ten Executive Committee positions, including the Treasurer, for women.

The issue holds importance as the Supreme Court is hearing two petitions advocating for the implementation of 33% reservation for women in bar elections across Delhi’s district bar associations, including the DHCBA. The top court is set to further review the matter on October 16, ahead of the upcoming bar elections scheduled for October 19, 2024.
