NEW DELHI: A local court sentenced a juvenile to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the 2017 rape of a 10-year-old girl, stating that his release would be premature and that he needed further reformation.
The court pointed out a “significant lack of clarity and coordination” among officials responsible for rehabilitating juveniles in conflict with the law. It directed the Delhi government to issue a standing order to resolve these issues in juvenile cases.
Additional Sessions Judge Susheel Bala Dagar issued the sentence after hearing arguments on the juvenile’s punishment. The juvenile had previously been found guilty under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for aggravated penetrative sexual assault and was also convicted of kidnapping.
