Congress Files Police Complaint Over Threats to Rahul Gandhi

On Wednesday, the Congress party filed a police complaint in response to recent statements made by leaders of the ruling NDA, which they believe pose a threat to the safety of Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha

The party accused these leaders of attempting to disrupt peace across the country, particularly with upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana.

The complaint, submitted by AICC treasurer and general secretary Ajay Maken at the Tughlaq Road police station, highlighted remarks made by BJP leaders Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Raghuraj Singh, and Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad. Maken requested the registration of FIRs against these leaders, citing their statements as dangerous.

Speaking to the media, Maken said, “Both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi sacrificed their lives for the nation, yet threats like these continue to be made.” He criticized the level to which political discourse in India had fallen. “Numerous BJP leaders have made similar remarks, yet the party has taken no action,” he added, suggesting that BJP leaders were targeting Rahul Gandhi because of his advocacy for marginalized groups like SCs, STs, OBCs, and minorities. “But the Congress will not be intimidated,” Maken asserted.

In the complaint, Maken highlighted specific threats, such as Marwah’s remark made during a BJP event on September 11, where he warned Gandhi, “Rahul Gandhi, behave yourself, or you’ll meet the same fate as your grandmother.” Additionally, Sena MLA Gaikwad had offered a bounty of ₹11 lakh for anyone who would cut Gandhi’s tongue, while Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu referred to Gandhi as “the number one terrorist in the country.”

The Congress accused Bittu of inciting public hatred and provoking violence against Gandhi. Maken emphasized that these statements were widely disseminated via television and social media. Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Singh had also labeled Gandhi as “India’s number one terrorist.”

The complaint argued that such statements from BJP and NDA leaders reflect a personal vendetta against Gandhi and are designed to provoke unrest and violence. Congress further alleged that these actions were a response to Gandhi’s focus on issues affecting women, youth, Dalits, and other marginalized groups, which had unsettled the ruling party.

The complaint also accused the leaders of endangering Gandhi’s safety and attempting to incite public discord, especially with elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana on the horizon. It called for an immediate registration of an FIR under relevant provisions of the BNS, 2023. Congress further claimed that referring to the Leader of the Opposition as a “terrorist” was an attempt to undermine his office and obstruct him from performing his public duties.

The party concluded that these were deliberate acts of criminal intimidation and part of a larger conspiracy by BJP and NDA leaders to incite hatred against Gandhi and the Congress.
