B K Katakey Committee Calls for Sealing Illegal Coal Mines in Meghalaya
SHILLONG: The B K Katakey Committee has submitted a report to the Meghalaya High Court recommending the sealing of entrances to illegal coal mines using explosives to prevent their reactivation.
In its 25th interim report, the committee also urged for regular aerial surveys of areas with illegal coal mining to monitor and detect ongoing activities. This would enable appropriate action under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 (MMDR Act).
Additionally, the committee suggested that the Mining and Geology Department of the Government of Meghalaya arrange an urgent meeting with the Director and relevant officials from NESAC to explore methods for conducting these aerial surveys.
