Collegium led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud Recommends Justices N Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan for Supreme Court

Appointment of New Judges Recommended by Supreme Court Collegium

In a recent decision, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of two new judges to the Supreme Court: Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice R Mahadevan.

Justice N Kotiswar Singh

Justice N Kotiswar Singh, currently serving as Chief Justice of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, is set to become the first Supreme Court judge from Manipur, pending clearance from the Central government. Born in Imphal, Manipur, Justice Singh has an extensive judicial career, having served in various high courts including Gauhati and Manipur. The Collegium highlighted his impeccable record and the need for North-Eastern representation in the Supreme Court.

Justice R Mahadevan

Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Justice R Mahadevan, has been recommended by the Collegium for his judicial acumen and to ensure representation from backward communities. With a career spanning over 25 years, he has handled numerous civil, criminal, and tax-related cases, earning recognition for his expertise in legal matters. His elevation is seen as a move towards enhancing diversity on the Supreme Court bench.

Vacancy and Judicial Strength

Currently, the Supreme Court operates with 32 judges out of a sanctioned strength of 34, indicating two existing vacancies. The appointments of Justices Singh and Mahadevan aim to bolster the judiciary’s capacity and diversity at the highest level.

This recommendation marks a significant step towards strengthening the judiciary and ensuring equitable representation on the Supreme Court bench.
