CJI DY Chandrachud remarked on Saturday that a recent video circulating online, purportedly showing live streaming from his court, had been manipulated to mock him and depict him as arrogant.
Explaining the context, the CJI clarified that he had merely adjusted his position in the chair to alleviate some discomfort in his back. However, the video was edited to create the false impression that he had abruptly left the hearing while a lawyer was still presenting arguments.
Addressing the audience at the 21st Biennial State Level Conference of Judicial Officers in Bengaluru, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of ensuring adequate facilities for women, particularly in district courts. He highlighted the historical lack of attention to women’s needs in such settings, stressing the necessity not only for separate female washrooms but also for facilities like hygienic sanitary napkin vending machines.
CJI Chandrachud underscored the crucial role of district courts in criminal adjudication and urged judicial officers to provide mentorship to younger judges as a collaborative effort.
He also commented on the behavior of litigants representing themselves in court, urging a compassionate approach to understanding their actions rather than criticism.
Supreme Court judge Justice BV Nagarathna echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of judicial officers maintaining detachment from the outcomes of their work to ensure impartial justice. She praised Karnataka’s efforts to provide adequate funding and facilities for judges, aiming to shield them from external pressures and uphold the integrity of their judgments.
Other dignitaries, including Supreme Court judges Justices AS Bopanna and Aravind Kumar, and Karnataka High Court Chief Justice NV Anjaria, also addressed the event’s inaugural session. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was also present and delivered remarks to the gathering.
