CJI Chandrachud Nominates Justice Sanjiv Khanna as Next Chief Justice of India

CJI Chandrachud Proposes Justice Sanjiv Khanna as Successor

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud has initiated the process for his successor by recommending the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the senior-most judge following him, to the Central government.

According to sources, CJI Chandrachud submitted a formal letter of recommendation to the Union Law Ministry on Wednesday, suggesting Justice Khanna for the role.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna is poised to take office as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019, and is scheduled to retire on May 13, 2025, which will give him a tenure of just over six months as CJI.
