CJI Chandrachud Criticizes Repeated Case Mentions by Different Lawyers

CJI Chandrachud on Tuesday criticized the practice of having different lawyers repeatedly mention the same case for an urgent hearing, stating that it compromises his “personal credibility.”

He emphasized that he would not permit this tactic, often used by lawyers to get their cases heard sooner by switching advocates and requesting multiple mentions on different dates.

“Stop this practice of repeated mentions by different counsels. You are all just trying to take a chance. Whatever discretion I have as Chief Justice will not be exercised in your favor because there’s an attempt to manipulate the court,” the CJI remarked. He added, “Bringing in three different counsels to see if the judge blinks and grants an order is what’s happening here. I won’t allow it because my credibility is on the line.”

The remarks came at the start of the day’s proceedings when a lawyer requested urgent listing for a case involving the expiration of a mining lease.
