A Mumbai court today convicted notorious gangster Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, also known as Chhota Rajan, for the 2001 murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty.
The special court, operating under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA), sentenced Rajan to life imprisonment.
Special Judge AM Patil found Rajan guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
Jaya Shetty, the owner of the ‘Golden Crown’ hotel in South Mumbai, had reportedly been receiving extortion threats from Rajan’s gang. In response to these threats, the Mumbai Police had provided Shetty with security, which was withdrawn two months before his murder.
Shetty allegedly failed to pay the demanded extortion amount and was subsequently shot dead outside his office on the first floor of his hotel on May 4, 2001.
This life sentence marks the second such conviction for Rajan, who was previously found guilty of murdering journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. Rajan is currently serving his sentence in Tihar Jail.
