Canteen Controversy: Supreme Court Lawyers Rally Against Navratri Menu Restrictions

Supreme Court Lawyers Protest Canteen’s Navratri Menu Restrictions

A group of lawyers at the Supreme Court is voicing their discontent over the canteen’s decision to limit its menu to Navratri-specific food during the nine-day festival. This restricted menu excludes meat, as well as dishes containing onion, garlic, pulses, and grains.

In a letter addressed to the presidents of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA), the advocates argue that this move is unprecedented and could set a concerning precedent for the future. Traditionally, lawyers have brought their own meals to the court without any fuss during Navratri, but this year marks a departure from that norm.

The letter expresses respect for colleagues observing the festival but stresses that such dietary restrictions should not be imposed on others who rely on the canteen for their meals. The lawyers argue that this decision contradicts India’s diverse traditions and could lead to further impositions in the future.

“Excluding non-vegetarian options and foods with onion and garlic to cater to a few is not aligned with our pluralistic values. If allowed, it may open the door to more restrictions,” the letter warns.

The lawyers are urging the SCBA and SCAORA to intervene, requesting that the canteen return to its normal menu while still providing options for those celebrating Navratri.
