Bridge Collapse in Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province Leaves 11 Dead, Dozens Missing

According to local authorities, 11 people have died following the collapse of a bridge in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province

The incident (Bridge Collapse) occurred in Zhashui County, Shangluo City, around 8:40 pm on Friday due to a sudden downpour and flash floods, as reported by the provincial publicity department.

State broadcaster CCTV indicated that nearly 20 vehicles and over 30 people are still missing after the highway bridge fell into the river below. Xinhua news agency reported that five vehicles have been recovered and that rescue operations are currently underway. CCTV footage showed a section of the bridge partially submerged with water rushing over it.

Large areas of northern and central China have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Tuesday, leading to flooding and extensive damage. On Friday, state media reported that at least five people had died and eight were missing due to flooding and mudslides in Shaanxi’s Baoji city.

In response to the disaster, China’s President Xi Jinping has called for exhaustive rescue efforts following the collapse of the highway bridge.
