Bombay High Court Affirms Right to Multiple Marriages for Muslim Men

Muslim Men Can Legally Register Multiple Marriages: Bombay High Court Ruling

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has ruled that Muslim men are permitted to register more than one marriage in accordance with their personal laws, affirming a man’s right to register his third marriage.

In a decision made on October 15, a division bench comprising Justices B. P. Colabawalla and Somasekhar Sundaresan instructed the deputy marriage registration office of the Thane Municipal Corporation to process the application submitted by a Muslim man in February of the previous year. He was seeking to register his marriage to an Algerian woman.

The couple had approached the court after their application was denied on the grounds that it was the man’s third marriage. The court’s ruling underscores the legal recognition of multiple marriages within the framework of Muslim personal law.
