Bombay High Court Denies Default Bail to Bhima Koregaon Accused
The Bombay High Court on Friday rejected the default bail pleas of Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson, Sudhir Dhawale, and Shoma Sen, who are accused in the Bhima Koregaon violence case. The decision was delivered by a Division Bench comprising Justices AS Gadkari and Shyam C Chandak, who dismissed the appeals challenging the 2022 special court orders that had initially denied them bail.
The five individuals were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in June 2018. Gadling had contested a special court’s decision from June 28, 2022, which denied his default bail application, while Raut, Wilson, Dhawale, and Sen had appealed against similar orders issued on June 26, 2022.
Though Mahesh Raut was granted regular bail by the Bombay High Court last year, the order was stayed following a request by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for time to appeal to the Supreme Court, which subsequently extended the stay. Raut, arrested in June 2018, remains in custody.
Shoma Sen received regular bail from the Supreme Court on April 5, while Gadling, Wilson, and Dhawale continue to be in custody.
