Five Arrested, Two Minors Detained for Lynching Over Beef-Eating Suspicion
HISAR/KOLKATA: A 24-year-old migrant worker from Bengal, Sabir Malik, was lynched to death by a group of cow vigilantes in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district on August 28, following suspicions that migrant laborers were consuming beef. Police have arrested five men and detained two minors in connection with the incident.
The tragic event unfolded after rumors circulated in Hansawas Khurd village about migrant workers from Bengal and Assam eating beef. The situation escalated when vigilantes and villagers searched the workers’ kitchens and utensils. Police arrived, seized cooked meat, and sent it for testing, while detaining six workers as a precaution.
Malik, who had been working in Haryana for a year, was found dead the next day near Bhandwa village. His brother-in-law alleged that youths lured Malik to a bus stand under false pretenses before beating him with sticks and abducting him. The five arrested suspects, all from Charkhi Dadri and Rohtak districts, were identified as Sahil alias Pappi, Kamaljeet, Mohit, Ravinder alias Kalia, and Abhishek alias Shaka. The two minors were sent to a juvenile home.
Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini condemned the lynching, urging caution and discouraging such vigilantism, while Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed criticized the state government’s failure to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, the West Bengal Migrant Workers Welfare Board has reached out to Malik’s family, offering support. Fearing for their safety, other migrant workers began leaving the village after the incident.
