Chief Justice Praises Justice AS Bopanna’s Legacy as ‘Mr. Dependable’ at Farewell Event
During a farewell event hosted by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for Justice AS Bopanna, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud affectionately dubbed him as the ‘Mr. Dependable‘ of the Supreme Court. Justice Chandrachud reminisced about the times when Justice Bopanna would share judgments, and he would warmly agree, acknowledging his reliable and consistent nature.
Justice Chandrachud praised Justice Bopanna, highlighting his qualities as a judge, a compassionate individual, and a reliable friend. He likened Justice Bopanna to the cricketing legend Rahul Dravid, referring to him as the ‘Mr. Dependable’ of the Supreme Court, a nod to his reliability and steadfastness.
Recognizing Justice Bopanna’s gentle demeanor, Justice Chandrachud noted how he made everyone feel heard and valued, providing opportunities for young lawyers to hone their skills in his court. He commended Justice Bopanna’s diligence, citing his infrequent leaves even during his tenure in the Karnataka High Court.
Justice Chandrachud also lauded Justice Bopanna’s openness to new ideas and technologies, citing his initiative to allow family court proceedings through Skype.
In his farewell address, Justice Bopanna expressed gratitude for his journey in the judiciary, acknowledging the support of his family and colleagues. Reflecting on his career, he likened his achievements to a cricketer starting each inning from zero, expressing contentment with his accumulated experiences.
Justice Bopanna’s legal career began in 1984 when he enrolled with the Bar Council of Karnataka. He practiced in various courts before being appointed as an additional Judge of the High Court of Karnataka in 2006. He later served as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019.
In closing, Justice Bopanna thanked all those who supported him throughout his career, expressing appreciation for the cooperation and courtesy he received from colleagues on the bench and at the bar.
