Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest Timing Questioned by Supreme Court Amid Delhi Liquor Policy Case

The Supreme Court Questions Timing of Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest Before Elections

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has raised concerns regarding the timing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal‘s arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case, throwing a question to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Justice Sanjeev Khanna emphasized the importance of life and liberty, seeking clarity from the ED on whether criminal proceedings can be initiated without prior judicial scrutiny in the matter.

Justice Khanna, along with Justice Dipankar Datta, directed Additional Solicitor General SV Raju to address the issue of the arrest’s timing, underscoring the absence of material implicating Kejriwal in the case compared to the matter involving former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The court instructed the ED to elucidate the substantial gap between the commencement of proceedings and the subsequent arrest, demanding a response by Friday.

Kejriwal, who continues his role as Chief Minister from Tihar Jail since his arrest on March 21, remains under judicial custody. The Supreme Court’s notice to the ED on April 15 prompted a call for its response to Kejriwal’s challenge against his arrest.

Earlier, on April 9, the Delhi High Court upheld Kejriwal’s arrest, citing the ED’s limited recourse following his failure to comply with summons and refusal to participate in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has entrusted its election campaign to leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj, along with other senior party members. Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita, has also engaged in reaching out to her husband’s supporters.
