Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Friday that he will surrender to the police at Tihar Jail on Sunday.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, currently out on interim bail, revealed that he has been experiencing symptoms of a serious illness and needs to undergo extensive medical testing.
Kejriwal urged the people of Delhi to take care of his elderly parents, expressing concern for their well-being. “The Supreme Court gave me 21 days to campaign for the elections. I will return to Tihar Jail the day after tomorrow. I don’t know how long they will keep me this time, but my spirits remain high. I am proud to go to jail to defend the country against dictatorship. They tried to break and silence me in many ways, but they did not succeed. In jail, they tortured me and stopped my medications. I don’t understand their motives,” Kejriwal stated, according to ANI.
Kejriwal mentioned that he has lost almost 10 percent of his body weight since his incarceration. He voiced concerns that this weight loss might indicate a serious health issue. “When I went to jail, my weight was 70 kg, now it is 64 kg. Despite being out on bail, I haven’t regained any weight. Doctors suggest that this could be a sign of a serious underlying condition. I need to undergo several tests,” he explained.
The AAP chief announced he would leave for Tihar Jail at 3 pm on Sunday and vowed to continue working for Delhi’s development from behind bars. “They may torture me more this time, but I will not bow down. Whether inside or outside, I will ensure that Delhi’s work continues. Your free electricity, mohalla clinics, hospitals, free medicines, treatment, 24-hour electricity, and other services will persist. After my return, I will also implement a scheme to provide ₹1000 monthly to every mother and sister. I ask for your support for my family. My parents are very old, and my mother is very ill. Please take care of them and pray for them in my absence,” he added.
Kejriwal and several AAP leaders are accused of accepting kickbacks for formulating a liquor policy that favored certain businessmen and politicians. He was arrested on March 21.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court granted him a 21-day respite from jail, despite objections from the Enforcement Directorate, to allow him to campaign for his party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. This week, the Supreme Court refused to hear his plea for an extension of interim bail, advising him to approach the trial court instead.
On Thursday, Kejriwal filed a request for regular bail in the excise policy case in a Delhi court.
