Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sought a one-week extension of his interim bail in the Delhi excise policy case from the Supreme Court.
Initially, a Bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta granted Kejriwal interim bail until June 1, following his arrest on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering investigation.
The ED’s investigation stems from a 2022 case initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after a complaint by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The case alleges that Kejriwal, along with other AAP leaders including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, was involved in a criminal conspiracy to manipulate the Delhi Excise Policy of 2021-22 to favor certain liquor vendors.
Kejriwal’s interim bail was initially granted to enable him to campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. As his interim bail is set to expire on June 1, Kejriwal has requested an extension until June 8 to allow time for undergoing necessary medical tests. The Supreme Court had reserved its decision on May 17 regarding Kejriwal’s plea for permanent bail.
