Arvind Kejriwal Fights Back Against ED’s Arrest in Money Laundering Probe: Appeals for Release on March 23

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Challenges Arrest and Remand, Claiming Unjust Treatment in Liquor Policy Scam Case

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approached the Delhi High Court to challenge his recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and his subsequent six-day remand in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam money laundering case.

Kejriwal was taken into custody by the ED on the evening of March 21. Following this, a trial court had granted the ED custody of Kejriwal until March 28.

According to the legal team of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the plea argues that the arrest and the remand are unjustified, and therefore, Kejriwal should be released immediately.

Kejriwal has requested an urgent hearing of his case.

After his arrest by the central probe agency, Kejriwal was presented before the trial court. This happened shortly after the Delhi High Court’s division bench declined to issue interim protection orders in his favor.

Kejriwal had previously ignored nine summons issued by the ED. Additionally, Aam Aadmi Party leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, who are also implicated in the case, are currently in judicial custody.

In response to his arrest, Kejriwal had swiftly filed an urgent plea with the Supreme Court to challenge the arrest. However, this petition was withdrawn earlier today.

Furthermore, Kejriwal had previously approached the Delhi High Court to challenge the summons issued by the ED. He had also submitted an application seeking interim protection, and the case is set for a hearing on April 22.

Previously, the ED had lodged two criminal complaints against Kejriwal at the city’s Rouse Avenue Courts for failing to comply with the summons. Kejriwal has defended his actions by stating that the summons were unjustified.

The ED alleges that the excise policy was implemented as part of a conspiracy to grant a wholesale business profit of 12 percent to certain private companies, a detail not mentioned in the minutes of the Group of Ministers (GoM) meetings.

The agency claims that Nair was representing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia during these proceedings.
