ED Alleges Kejriwal Deliberately Elevating Blood Sugar Levels to Secure Bail on Medical Grounds
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) asserted on Thursday that incarcerated Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was intentionally elevating his blood sugar levels by consuming mangoes, sweets, and sugar-laden tea in order to utilize this as a basis for securing bail on medical grounds.
During proceedings before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, Advocate Zoheb Hossain, representing the national agency, highlighted that Kejriwal had been granted permission to consume home-cooked meals in jail due to his claim of being a high-diabetic patient. However, despite this, he was observed consuming items known to raise blood sugar levels, suggesting an attempt to build a case for bail.
Hossain revealed that the agency had obtained information about Kejriwal’s dietary habits and medication regimen by communicating with Tihar Jail.
The Rouse Avenue Court, in response to Kejriwal’s petition requesting regular monitoring of his blood sugar levels and access to his regular doctor via video conference, requested a report from Tihar Jail regarding Kejriwal’s dietary intake.
Advocate Vivek Jain, representing Kejriwal, objected to the ED’s allegations, asserting that they were made solely for media attention. Jain indicated that he would withdraw the current application and submit a revised one.
Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail in connection with a money laundering investigation related to the Delhi liquor policy case. His legal team informed the court that his blood sugar levels had dropped to 46 and were fluctuating continuously.
ED arrested Kejriwal on March 21 from his Delhi residence following the Delhi High Court’s denial of protection from coercive action by the federal agency. He faces allegations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as the purported ‘key conspirator’ in a money laundering case linked to the now-defunct Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.
Initially remanded to ED custody till March 28, Kejriwal’s detention was extended to April 1. On April 1, the Rouse Avenue Court placed him in judicial custody until today.
Earlier, the Special Judge dismissed Kejriwal’s plea for five legal team meetings in Tihar Jail instead of the current two. Despite this, the court allowed him to have books and home-cooked meals, along with other specified amenities, while in judicial custody.
