Court Warns Media Against Spreading Rumors That Disrupt Social Harmony
The Allahabad High Court recently addressed concerns about the impact of media on social cohesion while hearing a plea from Samajwadi Party leader Yasar Shah. Shah sought to have an FIR against him quashed. He is accused of spreading rumors on Twitter about a potential leak of the Uttar Pradesh Constable Exam, 2024 paper.
During the proceedings, a Bench comprising Justices AK Srivastava-I and AR Masoodi cautioned against media content that could undermine societal harmony. The Court emphasized that both print and digital media must avoid disseminating information that could damage the social fabric.
The Court remarked that the case highlighted the critical role of media in maintaining democratic values and social stability. It stressed that media should promote constructive dialogue and transparency rather than contributing to discord.
“The governance through democracy must encourage ideas and discussions that foster social welfare and peace,” the Court stated. It noted the need for guidelines to ensure that media practices support rather than disrupt societal coherence.
The Bench adjourned the hearing of Shah’s plea until September 4, after requesting a response from the State. The Court noted Shah’s minor role in the alleged cheating case, observing that his tweet had been deleted before the FIR was filed. The Court may consider interim relief for Shah at the next hearing.
Advocates Nadeem Murtaza, Harsh Vardhan Kediya, and Suryansh Singh Suryavanshi represented Shah in the proceedings.
