Judge Resigning to Run for Office May Impact Perception of Impartiality, Warns Supreme Court’s Justice Gavai
AHMEDABAD: Supreme Court Justice BR Gavai has expressed concerns that a judge resigning to contest elections could negatively influence public perception of judicial impartiality. Speaking at an annual conference for Gujarat’s judicial officers on Saturday, he emphasized that judicial ethics and integrity are essential for maintaining the credibility of the legal system.
Justice Gavai stated, “A judge’s conduct, both on and off the bench, must adhere to the highest standards of judicial ethics. Praising politicians or bureaucrats while in office, beyond mere courtesy, can undermine public trust in the judiciary as a whole.”
