Delhi High Court Urges Public Awareness on Monkey Feeding: A Call for Coexistence
The Delhi High Court has emphasized the need for civic agencies to launch a public awareness campaign highlighting the adverse effects of feeding monkeys in urban areas. In a ruling on September 30, the court stated that such practices do not benefit the monkeys but rather lead to conflicts between the simian population and residents.
The court directed authorities to devise and implement a program to address the growing issue of monkeys in the city. It also noted that littering food in public spaces attracts these animals, exacerbating the problem.
Highlighting the natural diet of monkeys in their forest habitats—fruits, berries, and stalks—the court expressed confidence that citizens can adjust their behaviors once they understand that feeding wild animals undermines both animal welfare and human safety.
