A procession carrying an idol of Lord Ganesh in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, was met with stone-pelting, prompting authorities to deploy heavy security across key areas of the city, according to police reports on Sunday
The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Mochipura area, where people were transporting the idol for the 10-day Ganesh festival. When police arrived at the scene, their vehicle was also damaged in the ensuing stone-throwing, an official stated.
Superintendent of Police Rahul Kumar Lodha confirmed that the situation is now under control. He mentioned that around 500 individuals had gathered outside the Station Road police station that night, demanding action against an unknown person who had initially thrown a stone at the Ganesh procession in Mochipura.
The police registered a case based on the complaint and headed to the location for further investigation, with the crowd following them. However, another stone was thrown, leading to further stone-pelting, resulting in damage to a police vehicle, Lodha added.
To disperse the crowd, the police had to resort to using canes. Reinforcements were brought in from Jaora town in Ratlam and Dhar district, and heavy security has since been deployed throughout the city. The situation is currently under control, the SP noted.
