Indian-American Voters Lean Toward Trump Despite Kamala Harris’ Historic Candidacy for 2024 US Elections

A Growing Divide in Indian-American Political Allegiances

When Kamala Harris became the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, it ignited excitement within the South Asian American community, particularly among Indian Americans. Many believed her candidacy, as the first Indian-American and Black woman to be nominated for president or vice president by a major political party, would galvanize support. Prominent figures like author Salman Rushdie lent their support, and financial backing surged.

However, Harris has faced unexpected challenges in securing solid support from Indian Americans, some of whom are now showing a preference for her opponent, Donald Trump. Factors such as Trump’s tax policies, his focus on small business growth, and his close relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have contributed to this shift. Rakesh Patel, a Virginia entrepreneur, explained, “Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan echoes Modi’s ‘Make India Great Again,’ and their camaraderie resonates with many Indian Americans.”

Deepening Political Divide

Indian Americans, traditionally Democratic voters, are increasingly split along party lines. California resident Raashina Humayun observed, “Our community has never been so divided. While I support the Democrats, many friends who were once Democratic voters are now leaning Republican.” This division is also evident among younger Indian Americans, with students like Pooja Khemka drawn to Trump’s proposal to offer green cards to international students, which many see as a direct path to securing their future in the U.S.

Demographic Influence and Republican Shift

The Indian-American electorate has grown significantly, with over 2.1 million eligible voters as of 2024. This growth makes them a key voting bloc, but a notable shift has occurred. Recent polls reveal that Indian Americans identifying as Democrats have dropped from 54% in 2020 to 47% in 2024. Conversely, Republican identification has risen from 16% to 21%. Harris’ favorability ratings have also declined within the community, falling from 62% in 2022 to 54% in mid-2024.

Appeal of Prominent Indian-American Republicans

The rise of Indian-American Republicans like Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy has also influenced the shift. Mukesh Aghi, CEO of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, highlighted this trend, noting, “The increasing prominence of Indian-American Republicans reflects a demographic shift in the community.” Economist Arun Kumar also noted the Republican focus on reducing taxes and limiting undocumented immigration resonates with many high-earning Indian Americans, whose median household income is significantly higher than the national average.

Harris’ Influence and Potential Impact

Despite these challenges, Harris still holds significant appeal among Indian Americans. Her background and accomplishments continue to resonate emotionally with many voters. Mukesh Aghi noted that her candidacy could still inspire Indian-American voters, particularly those who connect with her heritage.

As the 2024 elections approach, Harris’ campaign will need to address these emerging trends and reconnect with a community that remains an important factor in the upcoming election.
