High Court Raises Concerns Over Intent Behind Brij Bhushan Singh’s Plea
The Delhi High Court on Thursday raised concerns over a petition filed by former BJP MP and ex-Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh seeking to quash the sexual harassment case against him, filed by women wrestlers. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna expressed that the petition seemed like an attempt to derail the entire trial after it had already commenced.
The Court questioned why Singh had filed a single plea challenging both the FIR and the trial court’s decision to frame charges against him, stating, “Once the trial has started, this is nothing but an oblique way.” Despite its concerns, the Court allowed Singh’s counsel two weeks to submit a concise note and scheduled the next hearing for September 26.
Singh has requested the quashing of the entire trial proceedings, including the FIR and the order framing charges. The case stems from allegations of sexual harassment made by six women wrestlers, leading to an FIR being lodged against Singh. He faces charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. Though a minor wrestler had also accused Singh, she later withdrew her complaint, prompting a cancellation report from the police under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
Despite Singh’s claims that the case is politically motivated and aimed at removing him from his position, the trial court found sufficient material to proceed with the charges against him. The Delhi Police and the wrestlers have opposed Singh’s plea, questioning its maintainability.
