Unregistered Medical Practitioners Are a Threat to Public Health, Punjab and Haryana High Court Observes
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has denied bail to a man accused of causing a patient’s death by providing incorrect medical treatment, despite lacking proper qualifications. Justice Namit Kumar highlighted that the accused, Mohammad Faheem, had been practicing medicine without a required professional degree. The court further noted that after the death, the accused had allegedly disposed of the body by leaving it on the road.
The court stressed that unregistered medical practitioners pose a serious risk to public health, leading to misdiagnosis and improper treatment, which endangers patients’ lives. The accused’s counsel argued that the patient had died of natural causes and the treatment provided was not intended to cause harm. However, the court stated that it could not make a determination at this stage without further medical evidence and dismissed the bail plea.
