BJP MLA Challenges AAP Government in Delhi High Court, Accuses Ruling Party of Selective CCTV Installations in Constituencies Represented by Its Leaders
A BJP MLA has approached the Delhi High Court, alleging that the AAP government is selectively installing CCTV cameras only in constituencies represented by its own party members.
The petition, submitted by Abhay Verma, the BJP MLA from Laxmi Nagar Constituency in East Delhi, is scheduled for a hearing on August 27 before a bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
In the petition, Verma claimed that although former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had approved funding for CCTV installations in his 2020-21 budget speech, the authority to approve the installation sites was given to the Delhi PWD Minister. This, according to Verma, resulted in the misuse of power, with the Public Works Department (PWD) favoring constituencies represented by AAP leaders, leaving Laxmi Nagar deliberately excluded.
The petition, filed by advocate Satya Ranjan Swain, highlights that as per a survey conducted by Bharat Electronics Limited, 2,066 CCTV cameras were required for the entire Laxmi Nagar constituency. Despite multiple requests from Verma to the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government (GNCTD), there has been no response or action taken.
The plea further argues that the lack of CCTV installations has adversely impacted law and order in the Laxmi Nagar area, putting the safety and security of its residents at risk. Verma claims that while AAP constituencies benefited from the funds allocated by then-deputy CM Sisodia, his own constituency and its residents were unjustly excluded from accessing these resources.
Verma has requested that the court direct the authorities to approve and install CCTV cameras in Laxmi Nagar, as recommended in the Bharat Electronics Limited survey. The Delhi government and PWD have been named as respondents in the petition.
