Calcutta High Court Defers Hearing on Doctor’s Murder Case Amid SC Involvement

Calcutta High Court Postpones Hearing on Doctor’s Murder and Hospital Vandalism Cases to September 4 as Supreme Court Takes Charge

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday postponed the joint hearing of several public interest litigations (PILs) related to the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as well as the vandalism by miscreants at the institution, until September 4. This decision was made in light of the Supreme Court already handling the matter.

Amid growing nationwide protests over the incident, the Supreme Court on Tuesday established a 10-member National Task Force (NTF) to create a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and healthcare professionals. The apex court also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to submit status reports by August 22 on their respective investigations into the alleged rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor and the vandalism at the hospital on August 15.

The Calcutta High Court’s division bench, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, decided to defer the hearing of the 14 PILs before the court, given that the Supreme Court’s orders covered all relevant issues. The bench, which also includes Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, reiterated its earlier request to refrain from disclosing the identity of the victim after a lawyer informed the court that the woman’s name and photograph were still being circulated on social media, despite previous court orders on August 13 to prevent this.

On August 13, the high court had transferred the investigation into the alleged rape and murder from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
