Judge’s Urgent Actions in Lawyer’s Collapse Prove Ineffective

Nagpur Judge’s Quick Response to Lawyer’s Collapse Fails to Save Life

On August 17, a tragic incident unfolded in Nagpur’s District Court when Advocate Talat Iqbal Qureshi, aged 65, collapsed suddenly while awaiting his case. Despite the swift and commendable actions of Judge SB Pawar, who left the bench to assist, and the efforts of fellow lawyers, the lawyer’s life could not be saved.

As Qureshi fell unconscious, Judge Pawar promptly descended from the dais to provide immediate aid. Another lawyer, recognizing the gravity of the situation, contacted Advocate Nitin Deshmukh, former secretary of the District Bar Association of Nagpur, for medical assistance.

Deshmukh recounted that Judge Pawar and others attempted to administer CPR, but there was no response. When Deshmukh arrived, Qureshi remained unresponsive. Recognizing the urgency, they decided to transport him to Shanti Mohan Hospital, located behind the District Court. Judge Pawar, along with Deshmukh, personally drove Qureshi to the hospital. During the journey, Deshmukh reached out to former bar association president Kamal Satuja to arrange for a stretcher and other necessary equipment.

Upon arrival at the hospital, Qureshi was rushed to the ICU but was declared dead shortly thereafter. Medical records later revealed that Qureshi had been experiencing health issues for several days and had been using ENO, mistakenly believing his symptoms were related to acidity. A recent recommendation to undergo an ECG had been ignored.

Qureshi, who was a father of two married daughters, was buried later that day in a Muslim cemetery in Kamptee. His unexpected death has deeply affected the legal community in Nagpur.

Satuja lamented the incident, noting that despite the doctor’s advice, Qureshi had been reluctant to seek further medical evaluation. He also highlighted the lack of medical facilities at local courts, suggesting that an in-house ambulance might have made a critical difference.
