Kolkata Doctor Murder Case: Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy Arrested Following Forensic Evidence and CCTV Footage

Kolkata Doctor’s Death: Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy Arrested in RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case

In a significant development in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, Kolkata Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the brutal assault and killing of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor. Roy, who had been with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group since 2019 before transferring to the Welfare Cell, was detained just six hours after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to probe the incident.

Background of Sanjay Roy:

Roy, 33, initially served as a civic volunteer in Kolkata’s Disaster Management Group and later secured a position in the Kolkata Police’s Welfare Cell. He managed to leverage his connections to reside on the premises of the KP’s 4th Battalion, which facilitated his postings at RG Kar Hospital. His roles often involved extended periods of duty at the hospital, granting him significant access to its various departments.

Evidence Leading to Roy’s Arrest:

Roy’s arrest followed the discovery of a torn earphone in the seminar room on the third floor of the emergency building at RG Kar Hospital, where the victim’s body was found. CCTV footage showed Roy entering the building at 4 am wearing a Bluetooth device, which was later identified as being paired with his cellphone. When he left the building 40 minutes later, the device was no longer visible.

Incident Details:

On the night of the incident, the deceased doctor, along with four colleagues, had dinner in the seminar room while watching a sports event. After her colleagues left, she remained in the room to study. Around 4 am, Roy entered the room, sexually assaulted her, and, upon resistance, strangled her. Her body was discovered at 7:30 am.

Autopsy Report Findings:

The postmortem report, released late on Friday, confirmed that the doctor had been sexually assaulted. The report detailed multiple injuries indicative of a violent struggle, including blood stains on her face and body, scratch marks, and internal injuries. The victim also had a broken collarbone and significant damage to her lips, abdomen, and right hand.

The arrest of Sanjay Roy marks a crucial step in the investigation of this heinous crime, as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the young doctor.
