Supreme Court Halts Criminal Proceedings Against Ex-SP Leader Swami Prasad Maurya Over Daughter’s Bigamy Case
On Friday, the Supreme Court intervened to stay criminal proceedings against former Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya in a case involving allegations of bigamy and cheating related to his daughter. This decision comes after the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow Bench denied Maurya’s request to quash the summons and proceedings.
Justices MM Sundresh and Aravind Kumar, while hearing Maurya’s plea against the High Court’s April 12 ruling, have asked for responses from the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant. The case against Maurya and his daughter stems from allegations made by a complainant who claimed to have married her in 2019 and later accused her of remarrying without a divorce. Despite her divorce from the second husband in 2021, non-bailable warrants have been issued against both Maurya and his daughter, who are now declared absconders by a Lucknow court.
