MP-MLA Court Upholds 45-Day Jail Sentence for AAP’s Sanjay Singh and SP’s Anoop Sanda in Road Blockade Case

On Tuesday, a special MP-MLA court confirmed the 45-day jail sentence given to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Anoop Sanda in a decades-old case involving a road blockade protest

Background of the Case

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on June 19, 2001. Anoop Sanda, who was a leader of the Democratic Socialist Party at that time, and Sanjay Singh, along with their supporters, blocked a road near a flyover during a protest over power-related issues.

On January 11, 2023, the court’s then-magistrate, Yogesh Yadav, convicted all six accused, including Sanda and Singh. They were sentenced to 45 days in jail and fined Rs 1,500 each for their involvement in the protest.

Court’s Decision

Special Public Prosecutor Vaibhav Pandey announced that Special Sessions Judge (MP/MLA) Ekta Verma dismissed the appeal filed by Singh and Sanda against their conviction and sentence on Tuesday.

About Sanjay Singh

Sanjay Singh, a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was born in Sultanpur district and was previously affiliated with the Democratic Socialist Party.

In 1994, he established an organization called ‘Sultanpur Samaj Sewa Sangathan,’ which worked for the rights of hawkers. During this period, he became acquainted with socialist leader Raghu Thakur of the Democratic Socialist Party, as stated on the AAP website.
