Shah Rukh Khan and Ness Wadia Dispute Retention Rules at IPL 2025 Planning Meeting
In a recent IPL meeting convened by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia were involved in a heated argument regarding the retention policy for the upcoming mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. The dispute centered on the number of player retentions and the use of the Right to Match (RTM) card.
The BCCI confirmed in a statement that the meeting, which included team owners from various franchises, was a ‘productive dialogue’ focused on preparations for IPL 2025. The IPL governing council will review the discussions before making any final decisions. Although the meeting did not produce a concrete outcome, it provided valuable insights into the concerns of team owners.
A mega auction is scheduled to precede the IPL 2025 season, but there has been significant opposition from team owners. They argue for maintaining a stable roster and rewarding teams for developing young talent. Key topics of discussion included the necessity of a mega auction, the retention policy, and the Impact Player rule.
According to sources, Shah Rukh Khan strongly opposed the idea of a mega auction and advocated for more player retentions. His stance led to a notable clash with Ness Wadia, who was in favor of limiting the number of retentions.
Attendees of the meeting included Shah Rukh Khan from Kolkata Knight Riders, Kavya Maran from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ness Wadia from Punjab Kings, and representatives from other franchises such as Sanjiv Goenka and Shashwat Goenka from Lucknow Super Giants, KK Grand and Parth Jindal from Delhi Capitals, Manoj Badale and Ranjit Barthakur from Rajasthan Royals, Prathamesh Mishra from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kasi Viswanathan and Rupa Gurunath from Chennai Super Kings, and Amit Soni from Gujarat Titans. The Mumbai Indians’ owners participated online.
