On Friday, the Supreme Court sought responses from the Centre and other relevant parties concerning a plea challenging the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision not to conduct the NEET-Super Speciality (NEET-SS) examination in 2024
The NEET-SS exam, which allows doctors with post-graduate qualifications such as MD, MS, DNB, or equivalent to gain admission to super-speciality courses, has been a crucial step for many medical professionals.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra was informed by a lawyer representing 13 aspirants that the NMC has opted not to hold the NEET-SS this year. According to news reports, the examination is likely to be scheduled for January 2025.
In response, the bench issued notices to the Centre, the Medical Counselling Committee, and the NMC. The petitioners, Rahul Balwan and 12 others, were also granted permission to include the National Board of Examinations (NBE) as a party in the petition. The case has been listed for a hearing on July 26.
The petitioners referenced an earlier Supreme Court judgement, emphasizing that NEET-SS is mandated to be held annually, and the top court has already established a timeline for admissions to super-speciality courses. The lawyer noted that the decision to postpone this year’s exam was likely influenced by delays in medical course admissions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
