Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-nation tour to Russia and Austria, aiming to deepen India’s relations with these countries
In his departure statement, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the visit: “Over the next three days, I will be in Russia and Austria. These visits will be a wonderful opportunity to deepen ties with these nations, with whom India has a time-tested friendship. I also look forward to interacting with the Indian community living in these countries.”
Meeting with President Putin
PM Modi expressed his intention to discuss bilateral cooperation with President Vladimir Putin: “I look forward to reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with my friend President Vladimir Putin and sharing perspectives on various regional and global issues. We seek to play a supportive role for a peaceful and stable region. The visit will also provide me with an opportunity to meet the vibrant Indian community in Russia.”
He added that the strategic partnership between India and Russia has advanced significantly over the past decade, particularly in energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
Visit to Austria
Following his visit to Russia, PM Modi will travel to Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 40 years. He stated, “In Austria, I will have the opportunity to meet President Alexander Van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. Austria is our steadfast and reliable partner, and we share the ideals of democracy and pluralism.”
Strengthening Indo-Austrian Relations
PM Modi looks forward to enhancing the partnership between India and Austria in innovation, technology, sustainable development, and other emerging areas. He will also engage with business leaders to explore trade and investment opportunities and interact with the Indian community in Austria, known for its professionalism and conduct.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the importance of the visit to Russia: “There was a bit of a delay in our annual summits, it is a good tradition. We are two countries with a strong history of working together. Our economic relationship with Russia has grown tremendously. At the leadership level, it will be a great opportunity for PM Modi and President Putin to sit down and directly talk to each other.”
Scheduled Meetings
President Putin will host PM Modi later on Monday, and on Tuesday, the Prime Minister will attend a community event in Moscow.
