Pakistan’s Punjab Cabinet Approves Legal Action Against Imran Khan and PTI Leaders

The Punjab cabinet of Pakistan  has approved legal action against former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and other leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

They are accused of creating a “hateful narrative against state institutions,” as reported by Dawn. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, according to a provincial government statement.

Inquiry Report Findings

During a press conference in Lahore, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that the home department had submitted an inquiry report. This report allegedly revealed that PTI members were causing disturbances both inside and outside Adiala Jail. Bokhari accused the PTI of spreading propaganda and inciting hatred against state institutions, claiming their agenda was to destabilize the country rather than benefit it.

Political Criticism and Military Involvement

Bokhari further alleged that PTI spread false claims about Imran Khan’s inability to meet anyone, branding it as part of an organized propaganda campaign. Last week, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly criticized the military establishment for its alleged political role. He suggested that the Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) should be tried under Article 6 for a “political press conference.” This came after Major General Ahmed Sharif stated that talks with PTI could only occur if the party publicly apologized. PTI called the ISPR’s statements “full of contradictions.”

Demolition of PTI Secretariat

On Thursday, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) demolished part of PTI’s central secretariat in Islamabad, citing “violation of building rules,” as reported by Geo News. The CDA’s anti-encroachment team began the operation late at night, removing illegal construction. The plot was reportedly allotted to an individual named Sartaj Ali, and an additional floor was built in violation of building regulations.

PTI’s Response to Demolition

PTI condemned the CDA’s actions, calling the demolition illegal and unjust. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan stated that the party had not received any prior notice from the CDA regarding the encroachments. Khan claimed that if they had been informed, they would have addressed the issues themselves. He criticized the CDA for failing to provide necessary documentation during the operation.

In summary, the Punjab cabinet’s decision to pursue legal action against Imran Khan and PTI leaders marks a significant escalation in political tensions, with accusations of spreading hate and propaganda, coupled with recent actions against PTI’s infrastructure.
